Here's what every prospective buyer should know before choosing a puppy — the dilute genes, the testable markers, and why a clean, markless expression is one of the rarest phenotypes a program can produce.

The Genetics of Color

French Bulldog coloration is determined by a complex interplay of genes. The most sought-after rare colors — lilac, blue, isabella — are all expressions of dilute genetics.

The Dilute Gene

The dilute gene (d) affects the distribution of pigment in the hair shaft. When a dog carries two copies of the recessive dilute allele (d/d), black pigment becomes blue-gray and red/fawn pigment becomes lilac.

Markless Expression

A truly markless face — no mask, no ticking, no markings — is one of the rarest phenotypes a program can produce. It requires specific combinations of the K locus (dominant black), A locus (agouti), and E locus (extension) genes.
