Understanding Rare Frenchie Genetics
French Bulldog color is determined by a small set of genes that combine in surprising ways. Below is a plain-language guide to the rare traits we work with at Hidden Legacy Kennels — what causes them, what they look like, and why they're special.
Isabella
dd + b'b + coco (double dilute of chocolate)
Among the rarest French Bulldog colors. A soft champagne-to-tan coat produced when both the blue (dilute) and chocolate genes pair up. Prized for its luminous, almost glowing appearance.
Lilac
dd + bb (dilute of chocolate)
A diluted chocolate coat that reads as a dusty lilac or silvery-brown. Created by combining the blue dilute gene with the chocolate gene — rare and striking.
Blue
dd (dilute of black)
A slate-gray to steel-blue coat. The dilute gene 'd' lightens black pigment into a cool gray. Desirable and uncommon, with a sleek modern look.
Platinum
Extreme dilution (ee + cream modifiers)
A near-white, cream-tinted coat. The result of intense dilution across multiple genes — bright, clean, and exceptionally rare in Frenchies.
Merle
M (merle patching)
A mottled pattern of darker patches over a lighter base. Visually dramatic; ethically bred only with careful genetic pairing to avoid health risks.
Fluffy
LH/LH (long-hair gene)
Longer, softer furnishings from the recessive long-hair gene. Same loving Frenchie personality with a distinctive medium-length coat. Rare and highly sought after.
Tan Point
at/at (tan point allele)
Rich tan markings above the eyes, on the cheeks, chest, and legs over a dark base. The classic 'tri-color' look — clean, crisp, and eye-catching.
Fawn
Ay (sable/fawn)
A warm tan-to-gold coat, often with a black mask. One of the most recognizable Frenchie colors — elegant, classic, and full of expression.
Cream
e/e (recessive red dilute)
A pale, warm off-white coat with light pigmentation. Soft and bright, cream Frenchies have a clean, refined look that photographs beautifully.
